Deescalating Situations with CIT

With 33 percent of inmates in need of mental health services, the PA Department of Corrections knows the importance and delicacy of handling mental health crises. The DOC implemented Crisis Intervention Training to educate employees on how to handle situations when they arise. In this episode, CIT Program Manager Jim Kehoe explains the program’s history within the DOC and how it is used today. Kehoe also shares his personal experience using CIT inside the facilities, including a time when he used it to save an inmate from suicide.

A Different Type of Corrections

Since 1991, many Pennsylvania inmates have had an alternative option to the standard sentence at a state prison. The hours are tough, the work is hard and the program is grueling—but it could drastically shorten the length of prison time. Welcome to the Quehanna Boot Camp, a hybrid between corrections and the military that gives non-violent offenders the chance to serve their time while making themselves better. In this episode of Lockup Lowdown, meet Corrections Classification Program Manager Jim Stover and learn about how the Boot Camp works, how to get in and how it’s changing lives.
